Good angles.

We lived in Annapolis, MD till I was six, and I think my memories of the historic downtown district are one of the earliest elements to have shaped who I am as a designer. Lush gardens, charming townhouses, timelessly graceful Georgian architecture. And the sidewalks--I remember looking down at my feet scuffing over the worn red brick herringbone sidewalks and somehow just understanding that the pattern was beautiful.

thank you Dan Miller, random photo blogger, and your friends at Google Image

Lately, ever since spotting it in the Grande Dame apartment and in the Roman & Williams apartment Raina posted the other day, I've been having a major jones for herringbone floors.

Not to be confused, I have learned, with chevron-pattern floors.

But whether chevron or herringbone, I love it any way you slice it. I love it unfinished:

Y'all can read, I don't have to say where it's from

I love it clear-finished:

I love it caramel, and I love it chestnut:

Google has all the anwers

I love it deepest chocolate:

Marie Claire Maison

But most of all, I think, I love it walnut:

You look like you came from Marie Claire Maison...

Stunning, every. single. one.

Oh, and hello glossy walls from Elle Decor! Particularly lovely with rustic floors, dontcha think?

Egads! The floors are stunning. I'm with Erin, the rustic / gloss combo is a soul crusher

Matt and I are hoping to put in hardwoods in the next year. How much do you think he'll mind If I ask him to cut the pieces short and lay them in a pretty pattern like so. Probably not much at all, right?

They have my heart a flutter!

KP--He helped you do that hand-stenciled pattern on your living room, so I'd say you've got a pretty patient man there. Go chevron or go home!

Camilla, so nice to see you again!

I always thought myself as a thick plank wood floor kinda girl, but these images might make me a convert!

Ashley--you can love both kinds. It's like when you have a second child (I'm told): somehow your heart finds room for more love. ;)

Carolina--welcome, nice to see you! Love the colors in that Portugal post... yummy.

mmm...chevron. (mops up puddle of drool on keyboard).

something about it seems so continental and sophisticated, does it not? Even when unfinished (which happens to be my favourite permutation!)

I love this post. It reminds me of the Design Star episode this season where one wall was painted in a blue and white chevron. It was time-consuming, but fabulous! Great pics
